Menstrual Health & Hygiene

Ending period poverty, restoring dignity, and keeping every girl in school.

Home What We Do Menstrual Health & Hygiene

No Girl Should Miss School Because of Her Period

In Uganda, 1 in 4 girls misses school during her menstrual period. Many cannot afford sanitary pads, relying instead on old rags, leaves, or even mud — putting their health at risk. The shame and stigma surrounding menstruation forces countless girls to drop out of school entirely.

Period poverty is not just a health issue — it is an education crisis. A girl who misses 4-5 days of school each month falls behind, loses confidence, and is far more likely to drop out permanently. Without education, she faces a lifetime of limited opportunities.

At HIAN Charity Foundation, our Menstrual Health & Hygiene Program tackles this crisis head-on. We distribute reusable sanitary pad kits that last 12+ months, conduct puberty education workshops, and work to break the cultural stigma around menstruation. Since 2022, we have reached 4,200+ girls across 45+ schools.

What's Inside Each Kit

  • 6 Reusable Pads – 2 day pads, 2 night pads, and 2 liners made from absorbent, leak-proof fabric.
  • Waterproof Storage Bag – To discreetly carry clean and used pads.
  • 2 Pairs of Underwear – Clean, comfortable underwear for proper use.
  • Soap for Hygiene – To maintain proper menstrual hygiene.

Identify Schools

We partner with schools in underserved communities, identifying girls who are at risk of dropping out due to period poverty.

2

Distribute & Educate

Our team visits schools to distribute kits and conduct puberty education workshops. We create safe spaces for girls to ask questions.

3

Break the Stigma

We engage boys, teachers, and community leaders to normalize conversations about menstruation and end period shame.
